Double Cleansing: Your Foundation Step
Learn the two-step cleansing method that removes everything from sunscreen to daily grime without stripping your skin.

Every effective K-beauty routine starts with clean skin, and in Korean skincare, clean means truly clean. Double cleansing is the practice of washing your face twice in succession, each time with a different type of cleanser that targets a different kind of buildup. It sounds simple because it is, but the difference it makes to everything that follows is remarkable.
Why One Cleanser Is Not Enough
Throughout any given day, your skin accumulates two distinct categories of buildup. The first is oil-based: sunscreen, makeup, excess sebum, and environmental pollutants that bind to the oils on your skin. The second is water-based: sweat, dead skin cells, and residual dirt. A single cleanser can handle one category well, but it rarely handles both.
Oil dissolves oil and water dissolves water-soluble debris. By using an oil-based cleanser first and a water-based cleanser second, you address both layers without asking any single product to do a job it was not designed for. The result is skin that is genuinely clean without being stripped or irritated.
Step One: The Oil Cleanse
The first cleanse uses an oil-based product to dissolve everything that sits on the surface of your skin. This step is what makes double cleansing so effective at removing stubborn sunscreen and long-wear makeup that water alone cannot budge.
- Apply to dry skin. Pump a small amount of cleansing oil or balm onto your fingertips and press it onto your dry face. Water at this stage reduces the oil's ability to bind with surface impurities.
- Massage gently for 30 to 60 seconds. Work the oil across your entire face using slow, circular motions. You will feel makeup and sunscreen beginning to dissolve as the oil emulsifies with the debris on your skin.
- Emulsify with water. Wet your hands and continue massaging. The oil will turn milky as it combines with water, making it easy to rinse away along with everything it has dissolved.
Step Two: The Water Cleanse
The second cleanse uses a water-based formula to remove any remaining residue and address the water-soluble impurities the oil step left behind. This is also the step where your cleanser's active ingredients can interact with your skin, since the surface is now clear.
- Choose your formula. A gentle gel, foam, or cream cleanser works well. Match the texture to your preference and skin type rather than following any rigid rule.
- Apply to damp skin. Work a small amount into a lather between your hands, then massage it onto your wet face for about 30 seconds.
- Rinse with lukewarm water. Hot water strips natural oils and can trigger irritation. Cool to lukewarm water is gentle enough to rinse without stressing the skin barrier.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Double cleansing is forgiving, but a few common habits can undermine its benefits. Being aware of these makes it easy to get the most from this foundational step.
- Skipping the oil cleanse on days you did not wear makeup. Sunscreen and natural sebum still need an oil-based cleanser to dissolve properly.
- Using water that is too hot. It feels satisfying but damages the moisture barrier and leaves skin tight and reactive.
- Over-cleansing by scrubbing aggressively or using harsh formulas. The goal is thorough removal with minimal friction.
A thorough double cleanse also sets the stage for face yoga. When your skin is genuinely clean, the gentle pressing and gliding movements of an Yasmine session feel more comfortable and effective. Clean skin absorbs the treatment products you apply afterward more readily, and the circulation boost from face yoga helps those products work harder.
