Getting Started with Your First Session
Everything you need for your first face yoga session: where to practice, how to prepare, a simple warm-up, and your first exercises explained step by step.

Your first face yoga session does not require any special equipment, dedicated space, or preparation beyond a clean face and a mirror. The simplicity of getting started is one of the practice's greatest strengths. This article walks you through everything you need to know so your first session feels comfortable, effective, and easy to repeat.
Choosing Where to Practice
The only real requirement is a mirror and enough quiet to focus. A bathroom mirror works perfectly. So does a vanity, a desk mirror, or even your phone's front camera in a pinch. You want to see your face clearly so you can check that you are engaging the right muscles and not compensating with the wrong ones.
Lighting matters more than location. Natural daylight or bright, even artificial light lets you see the subtle muscle movements that confirm you are doing each exercise correctly. Dim or overhead lighting creates shadows that make it harder to observe what your face is doing.
Preparing Your Face
Start with clean skin. If you are practicing as part of your morning or evening skincare routine, do your face yoga after cleansing and applying a light serum or moisturizer. The slip from a product helps your fingers glide during exercises that involve touch, and clean skin ensures you are not pressing dirt or makeup into your pores.
Remove any heavy makeup before practicing. Foundation and powder can shift during exercises and settle into lines, which defeats the purpose. A bare or lightly moisturized face is ideal.
The Warm-Up
Just as you would warm up before a workout, a brief facial warm-up prepares your muscles for the exercises ahead. This takes about two minutes and makes every exercise that follows more effective.
- Deep breathing. Take five slow, deep breaths through your nose. Inhale for four counts, hold for two, exhale for six. This activates your parasympathetic nervous system and relaxes the facial muscles that tend to hold tension.
- Gentle face tapping. Using your fingertips, lightly tap all over your face for about 30 seconds. Start at the forehead, move down the cheeks, along the jawline, and across the chin. This stimulates blood flow and wakes up the muscles.
- Jaw release. Open your mouth wide, then close it slowly. Repeat five times. Move your jaw gently side to side a few times. This releases the masseter, which is often the tightest muscle in the face.
Your First Three Exercises
These three foundational exercises target the areas that respond fastest and are simple enough to master on your first try. Focus on feeling the right muscles engage rather than pushing for intensity.
- The Cheek Lifter. Smile as wide as you comfortably can while keeping your eyes relaxed. Place your fingertips lightly on the tops of your cheeks. Now try to lift your cheeks even higher against gentle finger resistance. Hold for five seconds, release, and repeat five times.
- The Forehead Smoother. Place both palms flat on your forehead with your fingers pointing toward each other. Apply gentle pressure to keep the skin still. Now try to raise your eyebrows against that resistance. Hold for five seconds, release, and repeat five times.
- The Jaw Definer. Tilt your head back slightly so you feel a gentle stretch in the front of your neck. Push your lower jaw forward until you feel the muscles along your jawline engage. Hold for five seconds, return to neutral, and repeat five times.
